Looking to break into the world of prop trading?

Our Akunacademy Trading Internship Program will introduce you to the world of options market making, where you will learn how we use proprietary technology to trade thousands of options over short time horizons while managing various dimensions of risk. If you love solving problems, are competitive, motivated and have a desire to make an impact at a growing firm? Then this could be the perfect internship for you next summer!

Internship Dates: Dec 2022 - Feb 2023 from our Sydney Office.

Donโ€™t live in Sydney? We have you covered. Akuna will provide travel and housing for anyone not living in Sydney.

Your training is important to us! Our seven-week program is well-established and builds on our flagship Options 101 Course (free for anyone to try). During this time, you will be guided through Akunaโ€™s classroom-style lectures, assessments & quizzes, practical training on trading desks and trader shadowing, to develop knowledge in the following areas:

  • Market Making
  • Financial Acumen
  • Options Greeks
  • Risk Management
  • Our systems
  • Lots more!

You will be taught the skill of market-making by our experienced traders who will guide you and your fellow interns through fast-paced trading games, staking real money as you compete against each other. These games will teach you how to value futures and options, hedge your risk, and get comfortable with option combinations.

We set interns statistics-based projects on real problems being faced by our trading teams which will develop your skills in excel and python (coding is not a requirement!). This might involve conducting analysis or building interactive tools with VBA macros.

During the final weeks of the internship, you will have a unique opportunity to experience live market trading using our world-class proprietary models & systems โ€“ thatโ€™s right, we give you real cash to trade in the real market, where you can put what you have learned about options theory and our systems to the test.

And letโ€™s not forget the most important thing โ€“ the relationships you make along the way! In addition to pairing you with a mentor, our engagement team hosts a slew of social events, team challenges and much more which will see you working hard and playing hard over a very dynamic two months.

We invest in our training and in our people. If youโ€™ve got the mind, and the attitude, we want to invest in you. If youโ€™re looking for an opportunity to start your career in an exciting firm, Akuna is the place for you!

It is a mix of keeping old systems alive and trying to build new systems on infrastructure.

Working on the Vals/Quant team, my role involves both bridging the gap between our quant research work and our prop systems as well as building mechanisms to improve our research capability.

As a trader, I'm responsible for overseeing our automated trading systems. This includes making sure it's behaving the way we'd expect, working with Devs on bugs to fix, or testing new features to implement. I also conduct research on potential new opportunities, and build tools to help us capitalize on those opportunities. It's exciting to know that my actions daily have a clear and noticeable impact on the bottom line.

Pros and cons of working at Akuna Capital

Pros

  • There's a really diverse range of backgrounds, so there's always an opportunity to have interesting conversations. The work itself is challenging and fun.

  • The people. Everyone is highly motivated and super intelligent.

  • I've been given the freedom to work on projects I find particularly interesting. As Iโ€™ve improved, Iโ€™ve been given more responsibility and trust, and itโ€™s rewarding to know that I contribute significantly to the company.

  • Working with some of the smartest and most driven people. Unique insight into an opaque industry. Very intellectual culture. Decent Work-Life-Balance for "high finance"

  • Collaborative environment, interesting work, flat work hierarchy, meritocracy, well compensated

Cons

    • Weird/late hours sometimes.

    • Steep learning curve, intense work and high expectations can be challenging.

    • Intense atmosphere sometimes causes stress

    • A bit of a steep learning curve because you need to learn so much so quickly
