About the opportunity
From the moment you join Alcoa’s Graduate Program, you will be given the opportunity of a permanent career that will take you far and beyond where you’ve ever imagined. You will grow professionally, expand technically, and become part of our community where you will be inspired and challenged daily.
Alcoa’s three-year rotational graduate program is designed to provide you with a broad but solid foundation in all key facets of Geology whilst allowing you to tailor your career path towards your interests and individual goals. Throughout the program, you will be provided with coaching, mentoring, hands-on and professional training to accelerate your development and maximise your full potential. The best part is that you’ll get to experience working on-site at either of our bauxite mines, while still enjoying a lifestyle where you can be home each and every night!
You will be exposed to numerous networking opportunities and be provided with an increasing level of responsibility where you will use your innovative thinking, motivation to learn and passion for growth to make an impact on our business within a high performing Exploration and Geology team. You will join an open-minded workplace where your ideas will be valued whilst developing professionally in a supportive environment that will encourage you to think outside the box.
As a Graduate Geologist at Alcoa, you will work at our WA bauxite mine locations to learn and develop your experience and expertise. This exciting opportunity allows you to create an understanding of the geological intricacies of shallow bulk mining whilst navigating the environmental complexities due to the locality of the mine site operating within the jarrah forest and close to local communities.
Over your three year term, you will rotate across the three main sections of geological activities:
Exploration – exploring the remote parts of the jarrah forest within the Darling Range to produce exploration and grade control drill plans for the development of mineral resources. This field opportunity allows you to be hands on, working with the drilling crews around drill rigs, undertaking geological mapping, sampling, and targeting often untouched areas.
Mine geology – working within the mine production environment, you will be mapping pit floors, generating ore blocks, and collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team to ensure efficient planning and extraction of the bauxite reserves. You will gain familiarity with open pit mining processes and heavy mining equipment, with a combination of office and fieldwork working closely with all site-based stakeholders.
Modelling – produce and maintain 3D geological block models allowing ore bodies to be defined in compliance with industry best practice standards which provides the basis for the 3-Year Mine Plan.

How to apply
I enjoy monitoring the process in my area and optimising where I can. Often little things have high impact when fixed or implemented which I enjoy.
Good mix of long-term projects and day to day work. Site exposure allows for more hands-on work experience and implementation of ideas.
My current role sees me responsible for all engineering in an integral part of the refining process. Ensuring equipment is adequately maintained, creating solutions to problems that arise, and looking at future improvements.

Alcoa thrives by developing best practices that improve our bauxite, alumina and aluminium business units. Join us on our journey!
Getting to rotate between different roles and experience different parts of the company.
Training and career development Great support structure Flexible working arrangements.
Leisure days off are a great perk.
I like the flexibility to work from home twice per week, and the ability to flex hours based on commitments if needed.
The variety of work keeps things interesting and engaging.
The lack of structure and care for the Graduate Program. Especially with no emphasis to the managers/supervisors to set a mentor and a training schedule.
Sometimes it feels like you're just a number.
Old systems and technology used.
The offices need upgrading as well as the equipment in the offices.
The business promotes inclusion, but they continue to hire and promote people in the business whose values do not align with the message they are trying to convey.
