We apply a skills-based approach to our next generation of early career joiners. We recognise that further education (beyond HighSchool) is role dependent - in some cases further education is necessary and in other cases learning on the job is a perfect way to gain practical skills and knowledge. How will I be supported?

Your career at Datacom will kick off with the Talent Elevator Induction. A carefully curated induction programme which ensures you have the best start possible at Datacom. We fly all of our Early Careers cohort to Auckland for a week of learning, connection and fun. Youโ€™ll get to know your peers, our leadership team and develop the core skills youโ€™ll need to get started in your role. Throughout the 12 months of our programme youโ€™ll have access to mentors, career coaching, social events and certifications!

What teams are hiring?

Cloud

  • As an Early Career in Cloud youโ€™ll be responsible for driving continuous automation of cloud operations and associated delivery leveraging agile methodologies. This is a highly specialised team, your role will include lots of further study and certifications.

Platforms

  • An Early career in this team will start a rotation, beginning in the Mobile Device team you'll build your skills supporting a fleet mobile devices, specifically for clients within the logistics industry. After 3-4 months you'll move into a Cloud operations role. This is a highly technical team so your integration will be gradual, you'll be supported to learn and gain certifications as your knowledge and specialisation grows so will your responsibilities.

Customer Delivery Service Management

Our Customer Delivery team work closely with our clients to meet their business requirements. As an Early Career in this team you should be an all-rounder. Great communication, very capable with online tools like excel, powerpoint and even PowerBi. You'll work across many functions of project coordination including financials, reporting, data, contracts and more!

Product Services

There are a few varied opportunities within our Product Services Group (PSG) this team are responsible for providing forward-thinking commercial and contracting strategies that support the Datacom Sales, Customer and Service Lines.

  • Operations: everything from vendor onboarding and reporting to change management. No specific skillset is required though background in business, commerce, finance, marketing or information systems would be ideal
  • Onsite Solutions/Field Services: the perfect opportunity for someone looking to start in the tech industry that has a knack for Hardware and is detail orientated. No qualification required! this role would be based 100% onsite and involved supply chain, asset management and warehouse operations.
  • Sales: An all-rounder that is interested in Tech, Sales and Business! Youโ€™ll be exposed to everything from Statement of work resourcing to event management. Strong communication is a must.

Application Services

Application Services delivers the full set of software-related services. We conceive, design, build and deliver bespoke, custom-built solutions, platform-based solutions and integration solutions from our Digital Engineering, Business Platforms, Data & Analytics and Digital Platforms teams. 

We also provide support of solutions once they reach production through our Application Assurance Service Line, using state-of-the-art and high-value DevOps and Agile methods not traditionally seen in the production support world.

As a field engineer, my role is to service, repair, replace, or troubleshoot issues for datacom customers. Tickets are raised by the customers, then our coordinators assign the ticket to a FE (Field engineer), once the job has been added to our Alliance app queue the coordinator assigning the job will ring and give us the details and SLA of the job. It is then our responsibility to travel to the job, within the time specified in the SLA, and perform the work necessary to resolve the customer's issue. Parts must be returned to stores for repair if the job performed involves a broken or defective part from the customer. Returns will be done for parts needing to be shipped to their respective companies for service or refurbishment. This process is the onsite admin side of my role that must be done to satisfy parts returns.

As a grad and new starter, I am still learning my role. With the help and support of my manager and colleagues I have obtained knowledge and practical skills that are needed for the competent execution of my role. In time, I will Gain more confidence and a better understanding of my role as a field engineer. The work assigned to me has naturally increased as my knowledge has grown from helpful development through shadowing and assisting colleagues in their duties.

Pros and cons of working at Datacom Australia & New Zealand

Pros

  • I love the hybrid working arrangements and the flexi hours. There's scope to fit in work largely when I choose.

  • Extremely supportive, understanding and helpful. The company cares about the overall wellbeing of the employee.

  • Opportunity for career growth.

  • People are helpful and collaborative.

  • The focus on continuous development through training or study is also a great benefit of working for Datacom.

Cons

    • Pay. If I had to pick on one thing it would be salary, however it's competitive enough that I'm not looking elsewhere.

    • Lack of team resources.

    • The lack of support as a graduate... I was put into major projects doing work well above a graduate level.

    • Can be a bit isolating because you're not required to come into the office.

    • There are meager activities in the Adelaide Franklin Street office for staff to indulge in.
