As a graduate data scientist in my company, I can work on different tools such as Azure data bricks, R studio, Power BI, which I never used in Uni before. I can feel how powerful and useful they are.

What's your job about?

My employer is an electricity distribution service provider. I am working in a data science team as a graduate data scientist that helps do data analytics for assets such as poles and wires. My job is to analyse the datasets to find a better way to make the electricity distributed more efficiently, or work with and support other teams if any data analysis is needed.

What's your background?

I grew up in China and came to Sydney after I finished high school. I did both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees at UTS in Sydney. During my time in Uni, I experienced different part-time jobs such as cashier in a bubble tea shop, student support at a collage and backend developer in an airline industry company. All these experiences helped build me into who I am.

In the last year of my master’s degree, I realized that I need to prepare for my graduate life. I started doing research online and applied to a lot of graduate programs. In around 3-4 months, I passed the online assessment, 1 on 1 online interview, and on assessment day, I received my offer letter. After finishing my master’s degree and visiting my family in China during the Christmas holiday, I came back and started my position in February.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes. People with different backgrounds can also do data analytics. From my perspective, if people are keen to learn program language skills such as SQL, Python or R, which are the commonly used language in data analytics, and are willing to learn Power BI or Tableau, which are very useful tools for data visualisation. Then no matter what background they are from, they can do data analytics.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

As a graduate data scientist in my company, I can work on different tools such as Azure data bricks, R studio, Power BI, etc. which I never used in Uni before. I can feel how powerful and useful they are, and we also have training for these tools so that we can learn deeply and explore more functions for data analytics.

What are the limitations of your job?

As this is a fully remote work job, the limitation is obvious remote work is not as efficient as everyone sitting in the office and face to face. If I want to communicate with another team member, I have to him/her in Teams’ chat to make sure he/she is available at the moment and wait for a reply. That takes time.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  • Join more social events, such as volunteer events, networking events in Uni or even clubs and social events. It will be useful for practising communication, not only in a professional way but also for small talk.
  • Try to get an internship that is related to the major, so that I can have a clearer mind of the career path at the earliest.
  • Change the major I don’t like as soon as possible. There is no need to push myself so hard on a thing that I don’t like at all or am not good at them.
