Why choose the FDM Software Testing Graduate Program?

Demand for skilled Software Testers has seen rapid, tremendous growth making this a career path with high prospects.

In this highly valued role, you will improve quality and reduce risk throughout the whole Software Development Lifecycle. Your work will include preventing incidents which could cause significant reputational damage, financial loss or even, in extreme cases, loss of life.

FDM’s award-winning training will give you the skills and confidence to launch your career as a Software Tester. Once trained, you will be placed as an FDM Consultant to work with one or more of our clients, where you will gain valuable commercial experience with some of the most prestigious names in the business.

We have several employee support programs designed to help you throughout your career journey with us, including wellbeing and mentoring initiatives, in addition to learning and development support.

What you’ll do in the Software Testing Graduate Program at FDM

Starting with the fundamentals, you will learn how to write and execute tests, assess and manage risks, report results and communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels of seniority throughout the development lifecycle. You will also learn the fundamentals of Java programming, which will allow you to work with test automation tools and frameworks, such as Selenium Webdriver and Cucumber.

You will learn how to successfully test in both Waterfall and Agile environments, giving you experience with different working methodologies. To certify and validate your new skills, FDM also offers you access to the ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level qualification.

Once on-site, you will work in fast-paced digital environments supporting projects that deliver innovative new features and software across mobile and web, from both a functionality and user experience perspective. You could be testing anything from self-service checkout machines and software for retailers, regulatory reporting systems for global banks, advertising scheduling systems for large media organisations, vehicle diagnostic applications for the automotive industry and much more.

Software Testing career prospects

A career in Software Testing is incredibly versatile and offers fantastic career progression opportunities, either in a technical or business role. Taking on a business-focused role will see you fulfilling the duties of a project manager but specifically managing the test process e.g. managing a testing budget and timescales for a project, writing test plans and strategies, assigning testing tasks to testers and more. A technical role often requires a deeper knowledge of programming languages and other bespoke technologies.

Here are just a few of the possible paths you could pursue:

  • Test Lead
  • Test Manager
  • Program Test Manager
  • Head of Testing
  • Test Automation Engineer
  • Operational Acceptance Testing Engineer (OAT)
  • Security Testing Engineer

Key skills for a Software Test Analyst

  • Analytical mindset - to identify the various tests that could be run to validate specific functionality
  • Curiosity - to explore a range of approaches that could be used to break the software
  • Professional pessimism - to see the negative aspects of software no matter how high in quality it seems
  • Attention to detail - to pick up defects that others couldn’t

I am in a role a bit different to the role I actually want to be in, but I have time, support and training to help me move into that role eventually. My role is enjoyable and the day-to-day responsibilities are in line with what I'd expect from the role.

Pros and cons of working at FDM Group Australia

Pros

  • My current managers are fantastic and are always supportive, they provide support in terms of my career growth and allow me to challenge myself.

  • Great environment, everyone is equal, always down for a laugh. Plenty of office events and after work drinks, a very inclusive environment

  • There is a very good support system, in a couple of different ways. For one, you have a cohort of people that are on the same journey while working in similar roles and similar places. They also have support staff around that are there to help for any issue.

  • The support and training you get from FDM

  • Great training program, great trainers.

Cons

    • Always meeting new consultants, but going to different clients, it is hard to keep relationships with consultants you meet initially.

    • Repetitive work

    • As a large multi-national there are some annoying processes in place (i.e. things like applying for leave and submitting timesheets)

    • I'd say salary especially as the inflation is pretty high

    • Throughout COVID - not having the ability to catch up with the fellow consultants and peers
