Management at John Holland

8.4
8.4 rating for Management, based on 46 reviews
How accessible are managers and do they make good mentors? You may want to address internal communication, performance feedback or praise and recognition.
My direct managers have been great, but I have seen some managers on my projects who could benefit with some leadership training. The good managers include the good feedback and only provide constructive criticism rather than blame.

I have had good, supportive direct reports that filter a lot of the shit out and direct it away from me, however I have not had a strong engineering mentor/coach.

Yes, manager are very willing to answer any questions you might have. They encourage and support career and personal development, and they receive training in areas such as mental health. Performance feedback is done in the form of setting goals and having fortnightly meetings to discuss progress.

My immediate manager is naturally quite busy with meetings but is always happy to give advice and answer questions. I get valuable performance feedback, although I do have to be proactive and ask for feedback.

Managers can be hit or miss depending on who you get placed with. Some projects can see you working for a power-hungry workaholic whereas others may see you reporting to a more understanding personality. All in all, most managers tend to be approachable when it comes to questions relating to work however, there can be times when managers see themselves as too busy or important to be assisting with graduate-level queries.
