Why did you apply for DevelopHer programme?
DevelopHer programme is a great learning opportunity that I would not want to miss, considering my passion about learning new concepts. I developed interest in coding during the duration of my masters. My friends from computer science background used to talk about it and that’s when the concept was introduced to me. I mean coding is like unravelling till you reach the first step where everything was started. The story behind the platforms that we use in our everyday lives. Reading about the program, I was sure that DevelopHer programme is everything that I had been looking for and past 6 months have proved my right!
What made you want to change your career and work in the tech industry?
I was working in the Marketing and Information industry. While working, I realised that all the information and marketing trends is being utilized using a software and someone is building that up. Moreover, looking at such a low number of women working in tech industry, I wondered why can’t I try software development?! I love challenges and that’s when I decided I want to enter the tech industry and started searching for coding courses.
What have you learnt from the DevelopHer programme?
I could not have imagined that 6 months could teach me that many concepts. It has been challenging and a great learning journey throughout. I learned fundamentals of coding in java, built website using java, html and CSS. I also learned C# Fundamentals and a built a website using Model-View-Controller Framework and razor. I believe DevelopHer programme definitely helps you build robust technical skills but at the same time would also work on building your interpersonal skills.
Any advice for other women interested in working in the tech sector?
Don’t think twice and by that I mean, don’t doubt yourself. My major problem was doubting myself.. Anyone can work in the tech sector. Anyone can code as long as you have constant hunger for learning. So, don’t think and apply!
Favourite thing about the DevelopHer programme?
My favourite thing would the support that you get from MYOB and also, your cohort. You will make wonderful friendships while learning something new each day. MYOB provides you support at each step. I had amazing mentor who would be there to help me with the coding problem or just being there to talk when I was feeling overwhelmed. The Program Advisors would be there to celebrate each victory and to support during the difficult times. Also, our feedback was very important to MYOB. They would seek feedback at every step to constantly improve the experience for us.
It’s a programme that will make you ready to enter the tech industry and make an impact.
