What are the key responsibilities, projects and teams you have been a part of and contributed to?
I’ve been fortunate enough throughout my graduate rotations to not only be exposed, but to contribute, to some of the key outputs of Treasury: The NSW Budget, The Half-Yearly Budget Review and the consolidation of the Total State Sector Accounts.
Each of these projects has given me an in depth insight into how Treasury and Government work. Each team I’ve worked with has not been shy in allocating responsibility, allowing me to make my mark on these significant reports.
What have been the highlights for you during the past 12 months?
A highlight of the graduate program has been experiencing the diverse range of functions that Treasury performs and the roles that are available. Being a central Government agency, Treasury has allowed me to perform a variety of tasks including analysing the State’s multi-billion dollar capital program, analysing the financial statements of a number of government agencies and reviewing government policy matters.
Over the past 12 months, I have been encouraged to not only improve on the knowledge and skills that I have gained during university, but to jump out of my comfort zones and experience the opportunities that Treasury can provide.
What have been some of the challenges you have faced and how have you been supported?
Having studied accounting at university, my strength is in numbers. Therefore, one of the greatest challenges for me has been adjusting to the diverse range of skills required in each Treasury rotation.
There’s no way I would have guessed that in my first year after university I would be writing briefs to the Treasurer and analysing Government policy matters. However, Treasury has provided the tools and support required to enhance my analytical capabilities through formal training, on the job experience, and general support from management and colleagues.
