Jonathon Skinner

My first job will be to collect the amended raw data from the team and calculate the new figures. I’ll use a spreadsheet I created a few months ago for this exact purpose.

7.30 AM

My alarm goes off, luckily, I woke up five minutes ago. Quick shower and off to the bus stop.

8.45 AM

I start the day by attending our bi-weekly 'Huddle'. This is a 15-minute meeting we have on Tuesday and Thursday mornings to discuss what's going on in the markets. The Huddle is a great way for those that are interested and/or knowledgeable about the markets to share their insights.

9.00 AM

With the Huddle over I'm back to my desk and planning out the key tasks I want to complete for the day. The deadline to have my 'Day in the Life' profile is tomorrow so I’ll definitely need to do that. Hopefully, it's a nice cruisy day with no unexpected incidents! I also admire the view of the Movenpick hotel.

10.00 AM

My boss comes over and says to drop everything, it's an unexpected incident. Our Investment Management team has noticed an issue with a piece of reporting data. We need to update a benchmark returns bar graph in about 40 different reports, usually we would generate these automatically but given the circumstances, we need to get on the tools.

My first job will be to collect the amended raw data from the team and calculate the new figures. I’ll use a spreadsheet I created a few months ago for this exact purpose.

11.00 AM

The calcs are done, and I run them past a colleague for a sense check. They look about right for now; we’ll give them a proper review later once the reports have been created.

11.15 AM

We’re happy enough with the figures so now onto the next step. An annual returns bar chart for four different funds at eight different points in time, 32 in total.  I’ll set up a robust process for myself and then get to work copying and pasting the data over.

1.00 PM

Job done. I’m happy with the outputs so am sending it off to the team for a proper review and sign-off. Once they’re ticked, I can finally start to amend the reports themselves. I’ve got some time to get some food, might have to bring it back to the desk today.

1.15 PM

After passing on the graphs, I’ve now got some time for the jobs I’d initially planned for the day. We have a monthly meeting for the NZX Project Office to provide updates to the Senior Leadership team on ongoing projects. I’m acting as the Project Manager for our Climate Reporting project and have prepared a slide to speak to at 2.00 PM. I’ve got enough time before the meeting to write some notes and prepare for any questions.

3.00 PM

Meeting over, time for a quick debrief with my boss.

3.15 PM

Switching attention to my 4.00 PM meeting now. I need to brief our IT team on some of the work we need done for Climate Reporting. I’ve prepared a requirements document in advance but there’s still a lot to work through.

4.45 PM

Our meeting ends 15 minutes early so my boss and I celebrate by making a cup of tea. The conversation with IT raised some good questions and action points to get the plans moving forward.

We finish off the day with a brainstorming session around the topics that came up in our afternoon meetings.

6.00 PM

A later finish to the day than usual thanks to the incident. I haven’t heard back from the team yet on the graphs so will pick it up again in the morning. I've got a football game tonight and there's a $250 bar tab on the line so it's time to head off.

Auckland

6.30 PM

I'm back at my flat and have time for a quick debrief of the day with my flat mates before heading to football. Unfortunately, they're lawyers so we discuss Section 30 of the Criminal Act, time to go.

8.00 PM

Trophy secured. Enough time now to head home, make dinner, episode of Shogun and get ready for bed.
