Russell Kennedy Paralegal Program

If you are a law student going into your final year in 2023, our Paralegal Pathway Program is designed to give you a real taste of life at Russell Kennedy. Russell Kennedy offers an 18 week program rotating through 3 practice groups. The program is designed to provide in-depth, on-the-job experience working across different teams within the firm. In the program, paralegals will spend 6 weeks in each practice group, which provides an opportunity to work with Principals and their different teams, clients and industries, and take a deep dive into matters, applying their skills learnt from formal studies in a practical, real life setting.

Upon commencement, paralegals are allocated a Paralegal Lead for their program. They meet with their Paralegal Lead on a regular basis to discuss their progression, rotations and assist with personal development. In addition to this, we also allocate a Rotational Supervisor and Paralegal Support for each rotation. The Paralegal Lead, Rotational Supervisor and Paralegal Support will ensure that you receive the necessary support to get the most out of your time with us.

We offer two paralegal roles each year, with one paralegal commencing in May and the second paralegal commencing in August. Both roles are part time 2-3 days a week depending on your university workload. The Paralegal Pathway Program is our future talent pathway into the Russell Kennedy Graduate Program.

I am a lawyer and each day is very different. I provide at least 1 advice per day. Some matters (coronial matters) are worked on for months and others just a few hours.

Pros and cons of working at Russell Kennedy

Pros

  • Russell Kennedy has an excellent work-life balance as well as a down to earth and friendly culture.

  • I work at a firm that specialises in the area in which I'm most interested. For me, this was always a major drawcard. Additionally, my practice group fosters a collaborative and inclusive workplace culture whereby senior practitioners take a hands-on approach to the personal and professional development of juniors. This, too, is a key benefit of working at the firm.

  • People and opportunities, hours are quite good for a law firm

  • People, culture, opportunity to engage in meaningful & challenging work

Cons

    • I can't identify any "worst thing" about working at this firm. However, any candidate should think carefully about the area(s) of law to which they'd like to be exposed during their clerkship, graduate or junior years. If banking and finance, for example, is what you're after - this may not be the place for you.
