The role

The security of our product is fundamental to Xero. The security teams work with all areas of the business to ensure our systems are secure. We keep the good in and the bad out. We help engineers produce secure products, defend Xero from cyber attacks, and do everything in between.

Youโ€™ll have the opportunity to rotate within different security teams or spend one or more rotations in our core technical program. Youโ€™ll be self-driven, enjoy collaborating with different teams across the business, and thrive on technical challenges. All you need is an interest in security, you donโ€™t need to have studied it.

Security analysts focus on the less code-heavy aspects of cyber security. The role values people with a keen eye for detail, naturally inquisitive skills, and a drive for upholding the safety of our customers. The role covers a range of duties including:

  • assessing Xeroโ€™s security risks
  • helping Xero pass security audits
  • assisting in security education campaigns
  • monitoring Xero for cyberattacks
  • being involved in security incidents by defending Xero as attacks occur

What weโ€™d like to see from you

Ideally, youโ€™ll:

  • have a passion for and express interest in the security and privacy of our customers like working with servers or data, and if you like to - script or write code then thatโ€™s a great combo
  • love problem solving, thinking on your feet, helping other people, and taking the initiative enjoy investigating why things work, not just how they work
  • enjoy building solutions for other Xeros, removing pain points and making their lives easier
  • diving deep and analysing root causes of issues and potential vulnerabilities

I'm currently working as a Graduate Engineer. My day to day responsibilities depends on the team I am in for the rotation. Mainly they'll include attending scheduled routine meetings, pairing with colleagues on the tasks we picked up, participate/facilitate discussions on the piece of work the team is exposed to, attend knowledge sharing sessions which are super valuable.

I am a Graduate Engineer. My day-to-day responsibilities involve attending and contributing to meetings where I can, learning and involving myself in the team's processes, and building on my technical skills by completing work relevant to the team's roadmap goals.

It can vary from team to team, but in general, I take on tasks to complete (coding). I can also take on scrum responsibilities.

Pros and cons of working at Xero Australia

Pros

  • The support that you receive as a grad is absolutely amazing!

  • The company is super flexible when it comes to work hours.

  • Xero is completely flexible when it comes to working in the office or from home.

  • We have an extra 5 days off which is amazing! We also have free health insurance.

  • The entire Grad program is done incredibly well, in terms of both technical skills and acclimating to Xero work environment.

Cons

    • Doesn't seem to be consistency between rotation teams (experience and standards in one team vary wildly from another).

    • Budgets for graduates can be slightly limited. Office environment + perks for Canberra is not great.

    • Some projects can be demanding.

    • There has been action on this, and more initiatives are planned for, but there are still issues not being attended to yet.

    • Would be nice if more options/flexibilities could be given when deciding which team graduates could go into for the next rotation.
