Pros & Cons

  • I enjoy working with my colleagues - there's a great culture and I feel like I am a value-adding and respected member of the team. Managers are also very supportive and accommodating when it comes to personal needs e.g. development, hybrid working, etc.
  • The people and the teams I've worked with are great. I have formed some great friendships, some that have continued outside of the office.
  • The culture and the people. There are some really fantastic people that work here that you can learn so much from. It makes for a really welcoming work environment, even whilst working remotely. There is also a really strong value of safety that encompasses not only physical safety but psychological safety. This is a top-down attitude that makes me feel like I can genuinely trust my coworkers and raise issues and know that they will actually be actioned.
  • The people and the culture are my favourite thing about working here. The company really lives its values from the top down and has developed a fantastic work culture. There is also a strong emphasis on safety, both physical and psychological which has had a really positive impact on the way seniors interact with employees.
  • The best parts of working at Australia Post include the strong support system - we have dedicated graduate and line managers, plus mentors at different levels. People are always happy to help, and the culture is overall quite positive. As a graduate, I am empowered to take on a number of complex and diverse tasks, and have had the opportunity to drive engagement with customers. It's also great to be able to incorporate work with facility visits to see the heart of Australia Post's operations.
  • The size, scale and age of the organisation means learning the ropes is a difficult process. There is a labyrinth of different processes and databases, all with different owners, so often work can be a tedious process.
  • It is a large organisation so progress on tasks/initiatives can be slow
  • I would say that there is sometimes where you feel like you aren't really providing a lot of insight into a team and also feel like your not contributing a whole lot it might just be more quiet days or weeks but when its quiet you do feel like you could be doing more.
  • Operating rhythms can be on the slow slide, because decisions usually require senior approval.
  • The only negative that I would mention is that our grad program only allows for us to rotate within our business unit, and this in some ways limits the scope for us to see and work in other parts of the business that may be of interest. However, in some ways this is also a benefit as it allows us to specialise in the work of one unit, and carry this knowledge throughout the different rotations.

From my understanding, graduates who perform strongly may have the opportunity to transition to a permanent position within a team they have completed a rotation with.

CSR is in the lifeblood of this company. They have made several positive steps forward with regard to sustainability and the environment in recent years.

Culture
One of the best parts of AP is the culture. We don't have the typical command-control structure that is present in other companies, and team members are empowered to make decisions and be accountable to these. There is a lot of support amongst team members, and everyone has time to help out. If I need support during the day, I feel comfortable to text, ring or email one of my managers. Our team also has daily check-ins to just see how we are all doing and whether we need assistance for the day (serves a dual function, for both mental health and work purposes). We are also very flexible with working arrangements and are aware of each other's preferences. After hours there is no expectation to respond to communications, and it is encouraged that we log off and separate home and work life.

Diversity

Diversity
There are internal initiatives to promote LGBTQIA acceptance and for minority communities such as ethnic minorities, women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and those with disabilities and accessibility requirements. The company has a diverse makeup and diversity is celebrated. Recruitment reflects this. There have also been efforts made to increase the diversity makeup of individual teams.

Satisfaction
My role requires a lot of in-depth understanding of the tech landscape. I have been given significant responsibilities despite holding a grad title which has allowed me to get some great work experience. Have been able to expand on my existing technical skills and learn a lot. The amount of work varies depending on the team. A typical day includes attending a daily team meeting to give progress on tasks, attending other meetings to coordinate work throughout the day then using the rest of the day to complete assigned tasks.

Office Work Environment
Our office is based in Melbourne CBD, and has many spaces for both individual work and collaboration. High tech facilities (Webex conferencing rooms), kitchens on each level and areas to socialise. Dress code differs from team to team, but for us it's generally business-casual (not too formal).

Recruitment
The recruitment process is extremely thorough, with multiple stages of interviewing. However, a distinguishing aspect of the recruitment process here is how genuine an interpersonal the recruiter is with you, keeping in touch with phone calls and text updates. They genuinely want to help you succeed in the process, even though it is quite a rigorous process.

Pay is very good for a graduate role though - solid base, plus a healthy superannuation on top of that.

Employees have access to LinkedIn Learning & a plethora of other resources. Personally I have grown my 'soft' skills through being provided the opportunity to lead projects and make recommendations to senior leaders.

Work Hours
We currently adopt a hybrid working model where we work 9-5. Hours are quite flexible (can do 7-3, 8-4 or 10-6 for example) which is great. On occasion, you may be required to work a little later to meet a deadline. Working remotely can tend to lead to working longer hours

Sustainability
The business does place an emphasis on reducing our environmental footprint, such as by using electrical alternative to motorcycles for letter distribution and having recycled coffee cup deposits.
