What it does:  East Gippsland Shire Council provides governance and leadership for the local community through advocacy, decision making and action.

Mission:  Our Vision is to make East Gippsland an inclusive and innovative community that values its natural environment, puts the community at the center of Council decision making and creates conditions in which communities can thrive.

Size and presence: East Gippsland Shire covers over 21,000 square kilometers, stretching from west of Bairnsdale to the NSW border. This diverse region makes up 10 per cent of the state, with over 70 per cent as National Park, State forest or other Crown land.

Best known for: East Gippsland has an abundance of natural and environmental resources: a temperate climate, Australia’s largest navigable inland lake system, an extensive coastline and areas of stunning beauty make the Shire a popular choice for sea and tree-change lifestyle seekers.

The good bits: community-focused, well-intentioned

The not so good bits: management in total disarray.

The East Gippsland Shire Council story

The Shire of East Gippsland is a local government area in Gippsland, Victoria, Australia, located in the eastern part of the state. It covers an area of 20,940 square kilometers (8,080 sq mi) and in June 2018 had a population of 46,818.

It includes the towns of Bairnsdale, Benambra, Bruthen, Buchan, Ensay, Lakes Entrance, Mallacoota, Metung, Omeo, Orbost, Paynesville, Swan Reach and Swifts Creek. It was formed in 1994 from the amalgamation of the City of Bairnsdale, Shire of Bairnsdale, Shire of Omeo, Shire of Orbost, Shire of Tambo and parts of the Shire of Rosedale.

The Shire is governed and administered by the East Gippsland Shire Council; its seat of local government and administrative centre is located at the council headquarters in Bairnsdale, it also has service centres located in Lakes Entrance, Omeo and Orbost. The Shire is named after the Gippsland region, in which the LGA occupies the eastern portion.

Social Contributions

The Council Plan recognizes that East Gippsland Shire is vulnerable to coastal hazards, inundation, fire and extreme natural events and climate change has the potential to increase our vulnerability. Work is continuing to understand the nature and extent of future impacts on communities. Council is committed to assisting communities to adapt to future conditions in a planned way. We have undertaken Victorian Adaptation and Sustainability Partnership projects by partnering with the state government to increase resilience and reduce risk from climate change.
