The Employment Hero Story

Employment Hero was founded in 2014 by Ben Thompson and Dave Tong. Originally, Employment Hero was originally part of Employment Innovations, an HR consultancy business founded in 1992 that provides all-in-one HR services for small and medium businesses, but eventually grew large enough to become an independent company of its own.

Employment Hero offers subscription-based cloud software solutions for small and medium businesses looking for a way to streamline their HR systems, from payroll to employee benefits. To date, more than 90,000 businesses worldwide have used their product, with businesses in industries as diverse as education, hospitality, and health.

Culture & Vibe

In spite of its remote-first policy, Employment Hero has a thriving working culture that its employees recognize worldwide. The company prides itself on its five important values that they expect everyone in Employment Hero to have from the top-down: we serve, we are one team, we are bold and ambitious, and we invent, and own it. Both past and present employees believe that the company manages its remote operations incredibly well and successfully cultivates an environment that is true to the values the company espouses.

Although there are growing pains, where things happen very rapidly that employees sometimes struggle to keep up, these are common problems for tech startups like Employment Hero to have. Most notably, despite these shortcomings, past and present Employee Hero employees have greatly appreciated and noted the company’s ability to maintain an excellent work-life balance for all its employees.

Career Prospects

Employment Hero does not offer a management trainee role for recent university graduates, although it may have opportunities available for internships. Despite this, if you are interested in working in the company, you should check out for open positions that they advertise for from time to time, since Employment Hero often hires for junior roles—which can be highly suitable for you if you’re looking for entry-level positions as recent university graduates. The same also applies if you’re seeking internship roles since Employment Hero’s internship positions are open based on their current hiring needs.

Although Employment Hero does not have a management trainee system in place, the company has a great internal promotion pipeline strategy, so you don’t need to worry about being stuck in the same job post for years on end—if you perform well, you can be sure that there’s definitely opportunity to move upward in Employment Hero.

Recruitment Process

Employment Hero’s hiring and selection process are quite straightforward, and not too different from that of other Australian tech startups. To figure out what positions are currently open, visit the career page of Employment Hero’s official website to see whether there are any roles available that might fit your current profile. Whether you’re a recent university graduate or a college student looking for an internship or full-time role, Employment Hero may have the right open position for you depending on their current hiring needs.

As a remote-first company, Employment Hero’s recruitment process is entirely virtual. So you’ll need to submit an application through their website, and if you are shortlisted, their talent acquisition specialists will reach out to invite you to the next stage of the selection process. You can expect to undergo several interview rounds, and if you’re applying for an engineering role, it is likely that you’ll have to complete a number of skill-based assessments. Whether you pass or not pass any of these recruitment stages, you’ll be glad to know that Employment Hero would keep you updated with your current status and inform you on whether you’ll get to join their team in the end.

Remuneration & Benefits

Employment Hero’s salaries for full-time roles, be it for an experienced hire or recent university graduates, differ greatly between job roles and years of experience. For example, a Payroll Support Consultant can expect to make between AUD 70,000 to 85,000, while a Growth Marketing Manager’s pay range falls between AUD 100,000 to 120,000. Although the information is scarce regarding compensation for internship roles, it is possible that Employment Hero offers paid internship positions.

As for employee benefits, Employment Hero offers the following to all of its employees worldwide, amongst many others: (1) 20 days annual vacation, (2) yearly learning allowance, (3) remote-working option, (4) home office budget, (5) paid parental leave, (6) self, health, wealth and happiness programs, (7) overseas working opportunities, and (8) Employee Share Option Program (ESOP).
