Who we are and what we do

IP Australia is a Government agency with a passion for bright ideas, creativity and breakthrough technologies. We administer intellectual property (IP) rights and legislation relating to patents, trade marks, designs and plant breeder’s rights, helping individuals and organisations to protect their ideas and inventions and promote innovation and business growth for Australia.  We assess new inventions to decide whether a patent should be awarded. We have a role in community education and awareness activities and we provide policy advice to government on intellectual property issues including contributing to trade negotiations and international forums and activities to improve IP Rights protection globally.

We are a portfolio agency within the Department of Industry, Science and Resources. With over 1000 employees, we employ over 350 scientists and engineers.  

We are primarily located in Canberra and Melbourne and have staff working across the country under a flexible working model.

We offer the opportunity for you to use your technical knowledge while increasing your capability in applying legal concepts, providing a comprehensive two-year patent law and exam practice training program coupled with dedicated coaching and mentoring support throughout the process.

Recruitment Process

We ask candidates to submit an online application, which includes providing their resume and academic transcript.

Following the assessment of these documents, shortlisted candidates will participate in a further activities to assess their suitability for the role. Our assessment activities include:

  • phone screening
  • virtual interview
  • written activity
  • referee reports.

We expect suitable candidates will be made offers in mid-May for a mid-June 2023 commencement.

Remuneration & Career Growth

Examiners of Patents will commence their careers with IP Australia on a salary of $81,270 plus 15.4% superannuation. 

From here, you'll commence in the IP Rights Patent Examiner Training Program. You will be supported by a workplace coach through a competency-based training program to build your competence/expertise. This includes both virtual classroom-style training and virtual on-the-job learning. 

After successful completion of the training program, you will work collaboratively in an examination team where you will search and examine patent applications and produce search and examination reports.
