We have Graduate opportunities available in both our Restructuring and Deals teams in Sydney.

Restructuring Graduate Program

Our Restructuring team deals with businesses in financial distress. Partnering with boards, management teams and financiers facing situations of financial distress, we quickly identify root causes, formulate turnaround strategies and implement value-maximising restructures. We advise companies across all industry sectors and business sizes. Responsibilities of a Graduate in our Restructuring team include:

  • Applying knowledge (industry and market) to anticipate, identify and address issues relevant to a client’s business
  • Assisting with management of projects, including stakeholder management and statutory reporting
  • Assisting with development and preparation of financial models to support creditor and client reporting
  • Research and analysis to support targeting clients and preparing for client pitches

Deals Graduate Program

Our Deals team provides financial and strategic transaction advice to corporate, private equity and banking clients undergoing an acquisition, divestment or capital raising process. We assist our clients throughout the deal life cycle from pre-deal (research, sale preparation, financial modelling, valuation), during the deal (transaction management, due diligence) and post deal (integration). Our market leading service is underpinned by our deep understanding of deals and drivers of value. Responsibilities of a Graduate in our Deals team include:

  • Design and development of operational and financial models to support transaction processes
  • Assisting in the preparation and presentation of proposals and client reporting
  • Assisting in the project management of diligence workstreams
  • Research and analysis to support transaction processes

To be eligible for the program you must be:

  • an Australian or New Zealand Citizen or Australian Permanent Resident at the time of submitting your application;
  • in your final year of (or recently graduated with) a business, commerce or related Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with a major in accounting, economics or finance;
  • willing to complete the Chartered Accountants (CA) Program; and
  • available to commence full-time work in February 2024.

As a Graduate, you will gain real world commercial experience and be challenged to implement pragmatic solutions on high profile engagements. Our Graduate Development Program is expertly designed to provide you with the technical knowledge required, as well as improving essential soft skills such as business writing. Our Graduates also receive full support to complete further industry related study, or post-graduate qualifications, including the Chartered Accountants Program.

Our people are passionate, driven, inclusive and collaborative. Continuous development is engrained in our culture and we have robust development and reward frameworks to support progression and generously compensate our employees. We offer a unique opportunity to work closely with senior staff and Partners, learning from some of the best in the industry.

Very challenging yet rewarding. I have been trusted early on to play a key role on multiple projects, ranging from conducting forensic analysis in response to cyber incidents, to assessing and uplifting the security architecture of organisations.

Pros and cons of working at McGrathNicol

Pros

  • The best part of working at McGrathNicol is the strong, supportive culture. Everyone is dedicated to helping you succeed and build a solid foundation for your career."

  • The positive and supportive workplace culture allows you to learn quickly as a graduate. It is not long before you are making genuine contributions and working independently.

  • Graduates get to work closely with senior staff like Directors and Partners, which is not an opportunity you receive at larger firms and provides great growth and learning opportunities.

  • Managers are supportive of working 1-2 days a week from home.

  • As a Graduate, you have a formal development program which involves online sessions and in-person camps with graduates across the country and all service lines.

Cons

    • Lack of resourcing during busy periods can place undue responsibility on younger team members.

    • There are times when work gets very busy, and I stay back a little to meet deadlines.

    • Smaller firm means the grad cohort is smaller.

    • I know some of my friends are on more at a similar level... Pay could be higher as the hours can be long.

    • High expectations during busy periods, which can be stressful… but I like how the McGrathNicol team works together to spread the workload.”
