Pros & Cons

  • There is no 1 best thing about the company. My company promotes flexibility which was extremely helpful when I was undertaking further study. The company is very invested in the graduates and in our development.
  • Get to be exposed to the real-world application of construction.
  • TransGrid has a lot of variety of work with engineering opportunities in design, procurement, maintenance, asset management, project and construction management etc. If you work for TG, the company gives you a very fulfilling role with great learning opportunities, full autonomy and offers good benefits and perks.
  • Inclusive and supportive atmosphere.
  • We are given the opportunity to manage our own projects, therefore, allowing us to develop our project management and construction skills through the support of various leading experts within the company.
  • Performance (and possibly salary) review
  • The graduate program is not tailored to individual preferences.

Career Prospects
As a young starter promotion possibilities are harder to obtain. There are many people who have been in the organisation for years as such unless someone leaves generally it seems hard to move up the ranks. I am hopeful this changes with a crackdown on succession planning and development plans.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility
The industry we are in innately forces us to think of CSR in everything that we do. From having an Indigenous Liaison on Major Projects in remote locations to running many initiatives for RAP and the Diversity and Inclusion/Wellbeing programs, TransGrid is heavily invested in our footprint and safety and wellbeing of staff.

Culture
8.5
Culture
Generally, the culture of TransGrid is inclusive. There has been a lot of work done in the past few years to build collaboration and teamwork, especially since privatisation. The graduate cohort is close inside and outside of work which has really helped my journey from university to full-time work. We are able to share experiences and help each other when we are having trouble. The organisation as a whole still has work to do to continue to build collaboration, leadership and socialisation but is on track to doing so.

Diversity
8.8
Diversity
TransGrid is fully invested in diversity. It has been an issue in the past not just for TransGrid but the whole industry, however, we have current programs that are breaking these down. TransGrid provides opportunities for women in engineering, a great parental leave policy which sees benefits for men and women.

Satisfaction
8.3
Satisfaction
My day-to-day responsibilities vary depending on who I am working with on the day or on a project that I have been assigned to. I have had the opportunity to work with a myriad of stakeholders and be exposed to different areas of the business. TransGrid is open to developing our skills and to do this it is important to move around the business.

Management
Our managers are very supportive. They will respond to our emails and answer our calls very quickly. They are encouraging and they give us our own projects to manage, showing how they trust us and our capabilities.

Office Work Environment
Dress code is smart casual/business with casual Fridays. We have many office locations of the two main ones in Eastern Creek and Ultimo. The Ultimo office is a good space, though desks are sparse. There is a good kitchen/eating area that doubles up as an event and meeting space. We are in the heart of Ultimo so just a short walk to Chinatown! The Eastern Creek Office has a great culture with many different buildings.

Training

Training
As a graduate, the training and development programme is extensive. We have some sort of training every 2-3 months. I also have a mentor who I meet up with weekly who is a great avenue to express concerns, interests and ask questions. To date, the best training I have received was a 2-day presentation skills training. It was insightful and made me re-think how I present. It also made me more aware of understanding the audience.

TG is extremely flexible. Most managers do not micro-manage and will let you choose your hours for as long as the work is being done.

Sustainability
TransGrid is fairly invested in reducing their footprint. With many recycling bins and signs about rubbish around the office. We have newsletters and notifications about climate change and environmental awareness.
